Birds, Bees and Chickens
Yesterday morning I was in the kitchen with Travis, eating breakfast (me: Kashi GoLean Crunch cereal; him: 4 pieces of bacon, a Grands biscuit with butter and jelly, and a two-egg omelet...yes, I cook breakfast like that all the time for ONE child) when we got into a conversation about eggs.
Travis: Mom, how do you make eggs?
Me: Well, I crack them open and
Travis: No, no, no - how do you make an egg? Like the actual egg?
Me: They come from chickens, you know that.
Travis: Yeah, but how come these eggs don't have chickens in them? How can you tell which eggs have chickens and which eggs don't? How does a baby chicken get in the egg?
Why? Why must my child bring this up exactly seven minutes before we need to walk out the door and head to school? Why must he ask ME? Why not his DAD? Why? Why? WHY??????
I kind of appeased him by telling him that all chickens lay eggs, but those eggs from chickens who are by themselves are the ones we can eat. Eggs from chickens that are living around roosters might have baby chickens in there go brush your teeth and put on your shoes we're going to be late to school.
I am so not ready for THE TALK. At all.
Labels: birds and bees, going gray, Travis

You probably gave more than I would have in terms "The TALK" since you suggested a rooster might be involved. :) My answer probably would've been: "Some eggs have chicks in them and some don't, so the people who gather the eggs hold them up to a light, and if they don't see a chick growing, we can eat them. Want some chocolate?" The last part would have been to distract him from the follow-up: "But how do the chicks get in there?"
Oh man, I was really hoping you'd explain it for us here.
But have you ever split open a store bought egg only to find that they accidentally packed in a fertilized one. Gah! Vomit!
My mom gave all three of us "the talk" when my older brother was in 6th grade (because he wanted to know why all the girls got to go to a special assembly while the boys had to stay in class), which would have put me in 2nd, and my little brother in 1st. I still remember it and will probably use it for Edith when she's ready.
I so impressed! I will use your little illustration when my "time" comes :) Of course, it may not revolve around chickens, but maybe if I bring up chickens & eggs, I can distract him and confuse him enough to buy myself a little more time!
Oh, you're good! Say what needs saying, change the subject quick and don't let him get a word in edgewise. Whew!
