Party Time Approacheth

We stopped by a couple of venues yesterday to get information on doing up a 9 year old party in a few weeks. It is TOTALLY out of my comfort zone to wait this late in the game to plan an event like a birthday party (ask anyone in my family - they will wholeheartedly agree as I am currently making mental Christmas plans already, haha), so I'm in a bit of a panic. It is tough, though, to plan an August birthday in Texas. The heat'll kill ya.

Last year, we did a party here at the house. We had a scavenger hunt that ended with a water balloon fight, cake and ice cream, presents, and a movie that we projected on the wall of our living room like a movie theater. It was good, but it was a TON of work, and I realized I am very willing to pay someone else to do the cleaning and locale! However, when you are turning 9, Chuck E. Cheese and McDonald's are definitely NOT your first choices.

We called the local movie theater, but they aren't set up for parties. There is a theater in the next town up the road that is, but (1) I don't want to transport kids in my little sedan and the Jeep and (2) I cringe to think about the gas parents would burn to get there in the first place. I checked out a new inflatable party place in town, but it is really for littler kids (like Tyler, who has already claimed the place for his birthday party this year, haha). We even went to the Snake Farm, but there's just something not right about eating cake around stinky reptiles and OUTSIDE (again, August in Texas, think about it). Our last stop was the YMCA, and we're on the schedule for a swim party.

So, I'm off to talk to the coordinator over there today about this party, finalize the invitations (yay for evite! That is the COOLEST thing ever!) and start making my shopping lists for this soire. Of course, I don't have anything else going on, like camps for Travis, getting ready for my class and getting the boys ready for school (which, by the way, starts TWO DAYS after Travis' party). Nothing like a little stress there.

At least we'll be around water. If/When I get thirsty, there'll be plenty around to drink, haha. (yes, the drinking thing is STILL very much an issue, grrrrrr, with NO answers).

Your vacation photos are really nice, thanks for sharing! Good luck with the party...a pool party at the YMCA sounds like a great idea!

ooh a swimming party is perfect especially during the hot and humid days of the summer!

Good call!

For future parties, don't forget to check out museums. The museums here in NY have group discounts and party rooms and special learning themes/games that entertain the kids.

Well, you can count me as one of the worst moms in the world! My kiddos have December birthdays - they fall right between Thanksgiving & Christmas - so our budget always takes a pretty severe hit at the end of the year. Last year, I promised the kids that we'd have birthday parties in the summer for them. And they keep reminding me about that promise that I have yet to fulfill! Not sure its gonna happen at this point - school is only 3 weeks away, and our weekend calendar is full seeing people and going places! I have a feeling that I'm gonna pay for it in December THIS year...I have to make up for lost presents, you know!!!

Have fun at the Y :) Such a good idea, I'd steal it if we were members of our local branch!

Swimming is usually a good bet, not that I ever planned/hostessed one. I just send the kids off to 'em! Good choice, I'd say

Bowling works too. Do people bowl in Texas?

Hey Abby!
Yes, we bowl in Texas! In fact, Travis had a bowling party when he turned 5 - and had TWENTY-NINE kids in attendance - that's a whole other blog entry altogether - maybe that is what I'll write about tomorrow...hmmm....

When the kids were younger, we always did the rec center, 'cause of the pool, for birthdays and other big gatherings. It's so ingrained in my kids that that's where they host their get-togethers, now that they're teens! Sounds like a great plan to me--let us know how it turns out! BTW, Uncle Lynn is being pretty generous, and is hosting another Great Pop'rs Giveaway, so come on by!
