What Is The Point?

***Update from last night - we all SLEPT! Amazing what a humidifier can do for a little kid with a cold!

Last week, I walked into my local grocery store to do a bit of shopping. And I splurged on some of those new "green" shopping bags. They had a HUGE display of them at the front of the store, and then there were other smaller displays in practically each "zone" of the store. I find it interesting that, for years, grocery stores have bought disposable plastic bags to load our groceries in and have given them to us, time after time, free of charge. But, now they offer a REUSABLE bag and charge us a buck to get them. Whatevah.

I got to the checkout line and made sure to put my new "green" bags up front. The cashier rang them up and then proceeded to scan the rest of my items. The sacker then started to load my groceries IN PLASTIC BAGS!

Um, hello? Are we not all on the same page here????

I quickly pointed out that I had intended for the groceries to be loaded in the reusable bags...that was the point of purchasing them. They both looked at me as if I had sprouted a third eye. "Oh, you want your groceries IN HERE?"

Yes. Yes, I do. YES I DO! Why am I spending a buck a piece on these bags if you aren't going to use them???? I just smiled and told them what a wonderful idea I thought these new reusable bags were...how durable they were, the solid bases, the handles, the side compartment for milk or other drinks. Oh yes, they agreed, these are definitely something we should all be using.

Then they proceeded to WAD UP THE PLASTIC BAGS THEY HAD ALREADY USED AND THROW THEM AWAY!

No, no bitterness here, folks - NOT AT FLIPPIN' ALL!!!!!

Needless to say, when I went back to the store a couple of days later, I went to the self-checkout line and bagged my own groceries. The right way.

I do have to point out that my last visit there, they were VERY ready to use my bags...and a lot of the customers are using them now. And, for Earth Day, HEB is giving away green shopping bags. All you have to do is turn in 5 plastic bags! YAY! Scott and I will be going in separately to get our token green bag! WHOO HOO! If you happen to have an HEB grocery store nearby, check and see if they are doing the same.

I bought some reusable bags at Brookshires a couple of months ago. The only problem is that I can't ever remeber to actually take them with me to the store.
